Farm Pond

Farm Pond is a beautiful destination in Sherborn, Massachusetts that draws people of all ages. From swimming and sailing, to fishing and sun tanning on the beach, Farm Pond is one of the beloved gems of Sherborn.

Farm Pond, a gem in the Town of Sherborn, is more than just a tranquil body of water. It’s a place with deep historical roots, tied closely to the town’s identity and evolution.

This 125 acre kettle pond was formed by glacial activity thousands of years ago. Its clear, spring-fed waters have long made it a gathering spot— for both nature and people. Long before Sherborn was incorporated in 1674, Native American tribes used the pond and surrounding area as a seasonal resource, fishing its waters and hunting nearby.

In the 19th century, Farm Pond became a hub for ice harvesting, a booming New England industry before refrigeration. Workers would cut massive blocks of ice from the pond during winter, store them in ice houses, and ship them to Boston and beyond. Remnants of this trade, including stone foundations and old paths, still trace the land around the pond.

Today, Farm Pond remains a cherished part of Sherborn life.

During the warm Summer months, lifeguards are frequently on duty at the publicly-accessible beach, and swimming is popular for people of all ages. There are floating docks with swim lanes for people who want to swim laps. The swimming lanes are home to the Snappers Swim Club.

In addition to swimming, people use Farm Pond for many different boating activities. You can find kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, and sailing. Many people also enjoy sunbathing on the sandy beach.

There is a boat launch for people who wish to bring their boat of choice in and out of the pond, and Sherborn Yacht Club offers some mooring spots for people who wish to leave their small craft on the Pond.

Of note, Farm Pond does not allow any kinds of boats with motors. In addition, boat permits are required from the Town of Sherborn.

In addition to the water-based activities, people also enjoy bird watching and hiking the trails around Farm Pond.

In order to park in the Farm Pond parking lot, Sherborn residents must purchase a Farm Pond parking permit and show the sticker when entering the parking lot. Non-residents may enter a lottery each year to try and purchase a parking permit. Non-residents may also find a limited number of parking areas off the road leading to Farm Pond, and they can walk to the Pond from there. Be mindful of “no parking” signs in some areas.
